Environmentally Friendly and Green Roofing Materials

These days, many Venice residents are aware of the need to utilize recyclable products whenever possible.  Although this awareness has largely surrounded household items such as water bottles and light bulbs, it is growing to encompass all aspects of life. On occasion, we are asked about the existence of green roofing materials, and if it is possible to install an eco-friendly roof.

Although a completely green roof is rare, there are many ways which you can help to protect and preserve the environment by changing the nature of your roof.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is durable, long lasting and reflects sunlight – not only that, it is 100% recyclable. Homeowners can choose metal products which are already constructed from recycled materials, making their roof a efficient choice right from the beginning. Metal roofs keep your home cool by powerfully reflecting light, can last longer than 50 years (meaning they stay out of garbage and landfills) and are even fire resistant.  For the truly eco-conscious homeowner, a metal roof can be used to harvest rainwater. Overall, metal is one of your best choices in green roofing materials.   (along with reclaimed tile, below)

Repurposed Slate, Stone or Clay Roof

Clay and slate tiles are very popular in the Venice and Sarasota market. Along with metal, reclaimed tiles represent one of the most environmentally friendly roofing choice.  Because slate and stone are natural materials, they are very durable, and can last up to 100 years or more. Light-colored clay tiles can be utilized to provide cool-roofing benefits as well. Homeowners generally use tiles for Spanish/Mediterranean style homes, and stone or slate for more historical downtown properties.

Cool Roofing: Any light or white-colored roof is generally considered more environmentally friendly than its darker counterparts. This is because the light color allows the roof to stay cooler in the persistent sunshine, and can have a cooling effect on the space below. By reflecting many of the sun’s damaging rays, a cool roof system may cut down on energy costs as less cooling is needed. There are coatings which can by applied to your current roof, which are light colored and provide additional UV protection.

Recycled Shingles

Not all asphalt shingle is created equally, but there are many asphalt shingle products which are made from recycled materials such as plastic, wood fiber, and rubber. Because asphalt shingle comes in so many styles and colors, it is now possible to use recycled tiles as an affordable alternative to slate tiles. Purchasing shingles made from waste products keeps those products out of the landfill and these green roofing materials are virtually indistinguishable from traditional materials.  Less popular yet gaining some traction (pardon the pun) are shingles made from the rubber of recycled tires; which are especially resistant to harsh weather conditions.

(Literally) Green Roofing

Installing a living (or green) roof helps to moderate the heat effect  while cleaning the air. These roofs are constructed by planting shrubs, trees, grasses and flowers on the roof, limiting rainwater runoff, cooling your home dramatically, and providing natural beauty. While these living roofs are quite rare in residential areas, they are increasingly common in parks and on public buildings.
