Fall Roofing Concerns – Advice for the Season

While it is true that Floridians don’t experience the fall season like most of the country, we still anticipate a break from the very hot weather – and move into the holiday season with anticipation.  In mid-to-late fall we begin to see temperatures drop, and the rainfall decreases dramatically as we enter the dry season. With the fall comes the opportunity to do some much-needed home repair which was neglected in the hot, wet summer months – and fall roofing concerns are among those you should put on your list of home maintenance issues to investigate.

Fall Roofing Repair and Maintenance

  • Schedule an Inspection: During the very wet summer months, when rainstorms are an everyday occurrence, it is more difficult to perform any roofing job. While we stay busy year-round, jobs can be delayed and prolonged due to wet and slippery conditions. Fall is the perfect time to schedule a roof inspection. Not only will our roofing professionals be able to climb up on the roof safely, but we can take our time inspecting the roof for any damage which may have occurred over the prior months.
  • Schedule your Roof Repair: As a rule, we expect primarily dry weather for the next four to six months, so this is a great time to get on the schedule to handle any necessary roof repair. From broken shingles to cracked tiles, our harsh summer weather conditions are known to wreak havoc on roofing materials. Fixing these during the dry season allows you to be best prepared for the next rainy season, and you will beat the rush of folks trying to fix their roof before the first raindrop.
  • Check for Gaps: While it is necessary to have proper ventilation for your roof, gaps and holes in your roof, eaves or soffits can provide a welcome entre into your home for critters and birds. As the weather cools, they are often looking for warmer places to make a comfy nest – and once they have discovered a great little place to call home, will likely stay and have a family next spring. Ask your local roofing contractor about ways to maintain proper ventilation while still covering holes with mesh or chicken wire in order to keep unwanted holiday visitors out.
  • Check Gutters: Wild wind and rain often causes debris to build up in the gutters and downspouts. Fall is a great time to clean out the gutters and cover with some form of protection to keep out falling twigs and leaves, as well as birds and critters which may take up residence since no water is flowing.
  • Clean off Leaves: This may come as a surprise to some newer Florida residents, but there are some trees which will shed leaves in this region. While you likely won’t experience the colorful vistas this time of year brings to other areas, there are trees (such as maples) which will drop leaves on your roof and in your gutters. Without rain to clean things off, this debris can cause mold and damage. Keep in mind that during January and February, overnight freezes and frosts are possible, and could cause a soggy mess on a shady part of your roof.
