Do Metal Roofs Get Hot in Summer?

There are several reasons why metal roofing panels are one of the most popular roofing materials on the market. They’re exceptionally durable, energy-efficient and 100% recyclable. However, some homeowners are hesitant about installing a metal roof because of the myth they become hot in summer and can increase cooling costs.

Kingdom Roofing, your trusted roofer, debunks this common misconception below:

Why Metal Roofs Are Recommended for Homes in Hot Climates

Contrary to popular belief, most contractors would recommend a metal roofing replacement for homes in hot climates. That’s because metal has a low thermal mass (this property refers to the ability of a material to store heat). Instead of absorbing heat (which would, in turn, increase your cooling costs), reflective metal roofing panels reflect heat and UV rays.

Here’s a tip: to increase your energy savings and your metal roof’s reflectiveness, we recommend choosing a light-colored metal roof. Remember: the closer a shade is to white on the color spectrum, the more heat it reflects.

The Importance of Adequate Ventilation

Keep in mind that even with a reflective roof, your HVAC system may have to work harder if there isn’t enough ventilation in your roof and attic. Adequate roof ventilation ensures hot, humid air is circulated out of your home and cool air is allowed to enter your home.

How Much Ventilation Does Your Roof Need?

As a general rule, there should be a square foot of net free area (NFA)—the area through which air can pass—for every 300 square feet of floor area in attics with a vapor barrier. As for attics without a vapor barrier, there should be a square foot of NFA for every 150 square feet of attic floor space.

Important note: more ventilation isn’t necessarily better. Adding too many air vents can disrupt the airflow. If you’re not sure if your roof is adequately ventilated, it’s best to have it inspected by a local roofing contractor.
