Can You Live in Your Home During a Roof Installation?

For many Sarasota and Venice homeowners, the prospect of the major home renovation has them running for the comfort of a hotel room. After all, trying to live your daily life in a construction zone can be inconvenient at best.

However, the good news is that homeowners rarely need to vacate the property when they are having a new roof installation. In fact, with just a little bit of preparation, you can make the entire process relatively hassle-free. Here are a few tips to make the process of roof installation easy for you and your family.

New Roof Installation – How to Prepare

There are really just a few possible inconveniences when considering the reality of a new roof installation: noise, dirt, and weather.
Let’s take a look at all three.

  • Prepare for Noise: There is no getting around the fact that there is likely to be construction noise – as well as a lot of worker activity – while we are working on your new roof. After all, this is a major project. We will typically be tearing off old roofing materials, installing a new roof deck, and attaching new materials, whether tile, apshalt shingle, or metal roofing. There will be workers on your roof, and the noise overhead will be tough to avoid. Still, remember we will be working during the day – you may be at work, or perhaps you can simply make plans to visit friends or take the kids to the park. Because you know exactly when we will be there, planning for the noise is rarely an issue – and you’ll have a quiet home back by dinner.
  • Prepare for Dirt: Debris will be flying, and there is a lot of dust involved with a new roof installation as well. In order to best protect your home and property, move your vehicles out of the driveway – either park in the garage or on the street. Many of our clients like to cover their landscaping with a tarp, in order to protect plants, bushes and flowers from dust and discarded materials. In fact, you should move or cover anything within proximity to the home – patio furniture, grills, or sports equipment, for instance. Don’t forget to cover your pool! Protecting everything with a disposable tarp will also make clean up fast and easy – simply roll up the tarp and throw away.
  • Prepare for Weather: The only real unpredictable variable in a roof installation is the weather. This project must be done in dry weather, as our workers cannot be on your roof or install materials in the rain. Of course, we can’t control the weather – but we will always make sure that your home is properly covered and sealed up should we need to stop working in the middle of the job due to weather. We do ask for your understanding if the job is postponed or prolonged due to something out of our control. We always do our best to inconvenience you as little as possible.

Here’s a Hint: Inform close neighbors that professional roofing contractors will be onsite, so that they can move their vehicles if needed- as well as be expecting workmen in the community
